Drill defeated American Act by a nose to win the $150,000 San Vicente Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita, snapping a five-race skid that had frustrated trainer Bob Baffert. Ridden by Martin Garcia, Drill ran seven furlongs in 1:21.28 and paid $9.60 and $5 at 7-2 odds. American Act returned $4, while 1-2 favorite Creative Cause was another length back in third.

Kentucky Derby champion Animal Kingdom won a $60,000 turf allowance race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday in his first start since June. Last year's Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old moved in front during the turn into the homestretch and completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.72. Monument Hill finished second, two lengths ahead of Bell by the Ridge.

Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, will make his first start since June on Saturday in a $60,000 turf allowance at Gulfstream Park. Last year's Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old will make his return in a 1 1/16-mile race for non-winners of three races other than maiden, claiming or starter.

San Pail, a 7-year-old who won 14 of 16 races in 2011, was honored Sunday as harness racing's Horse of the Year. The champion from Canada also took home the trophies for Trotter of the Year and top older trotter at the annual banquet of the U.S. Harness Writers Association. San Pail received 93 of 117 votes for Horse of the Year after winning $1.28 million.

Todd Pletcher saddled his 3,000th career winner Saturday at Gulfstream Park, when Spring Hill Farm won the third race. The five-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer saddled his first winner, Majestic Number, at the same track in January 1996. He reached No. 3,001 late Saturday when a horse with the same name won the fourth at Gulfstream.

Fed Biz earned a dominant victory in a $58,000 allowance race on Thursday at Santa Anita as one of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's top Kentucky Derby hopefuls. Fed Biz won by 5 3-4 lengths while covering one mile in 1:34.74 under Rafael Bejarano. He paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.20 as the 3-5 favorite.
