Wed Feb 22 18:11:39 2012 The New York Mets have commitments for seven of the 10 ownership shares of $20 million each they are trying to sell to pay off debt and raise capital. The sale of the limited partnership units will not take place until all 10 can close at the same time, a person familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday.

Wed Feb 22 15:59:31 2012 Bobby Abreu says he wants to be an everyday player and thinks the Los Angeles Angels should trade him if he is going to spend most of his time on the bench this season. In a statement given to ESPNdeportes on Tuesday, Abreu says trading him is the right thing for the Angels to do if there is no full-time position for him.

A member of the Yankees' World Series-winning teams in 1977 and `78, Piniella managed them from 1986-87, was general manager...

Red Sox set to move on without Varitek? (AP)
Wed Feb 22 09:49:25 2012 The invitation remains open for Jason Varitek to come to spring training with the Boston Red Sox. But there are no signs that the catcher and beloved team captain will accept. It appears that an era is coming to an end. While other stars arrived early, addressed the media, and have clearly bought into Boston's new regime -- designated hitter David Ortiz waltzed in on Wednesday -- Varitek has not...
Mets' Niese has nose job, Beltran to pay (AP)
Wed Feb 22 09:23:27 2012 Last summer, Carlos Beltran offered to foot the bill if then-Mets teammate Jonathan Niese received a nose job. Now it's time to pay up. The surgery, performed last October, didn't straighten the 25-year-old pitcher's crooked nose, but that wasn't the point. Niese is breathing a lot easier after the procedure corrected a deviated septum.
Mattingly: Kershaw to start opening day (AP)
Tue Feb 21 16:43:25 2012 A casually dressed Don Mattingly leaned back in his clubhouse office chair admittedly much more relaxed the second time around as Dodgers manager. Nobody will question that his first move of spring training is spot on: Mattingly wasted no time Tuesday choosing reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw as the opening day starter for Los Angeles come April 5 at San Diego -- even if it's...
